Donors and Volunteers
To achieve as much as possible in furthering our goals to help build capacity in South Africa and enable youth to provide quality service in their community, C4L readily welcomes assistance, both financial and volunteer.
C4L's project and support staff receive salaries, but it also hosts volunteers who do not. It also has a roster of consultants and trainers that are paid occasionally - from tuition fees. Accommodation and food charges are NEVER ENOUGH to meet the growing number of needs and challenges that present themselves on a daily basis, because C4L charges on a cost-recovery basis, not to turn a profit. (Thus it is tax exempt.)
This is where YOU CAN HELP. C4L accepts donations of time and money as a registered nonprofit organization.
Personal Contributions
Personal donations, both large and small, can be made through one of three agencies, one in Canada, another in the UK and the other in South Africa. In each case, the donor is eligible to receive a tax receipt or benefits according to respective tax laws.
Overseas Donations
Canadian donors may make their gifts through our Canadian sponsor ReachOut to Africa (C4L Canada), headquartered in Vancouver, BC. It is important that gifts be clearly marked for C4L, as this charity supports various partners and projects.
In the UK, contact the George Muller Foundation in Bristol, or the Scripture Knowledge Institution which he founded.
See Volunteering below for options to volunteer in South Africa at C4L through ReachOut to Africa.
Donors
C4L has been blessed by grants from various donors, such as:
- German Development Service (DED)
- Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
- Tearfund UK
- Department of Social Development (DSD)
- Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA)
Corporate Social Responsibility
C4L has been fortunate to receive a number of corporate donations over the last several years that have been granted to fund specific projects, such as:
- Funding the design, equipping and launch of an Internet platform for On-line Training (Kellogg Foundation)
- Providing a vehicle to C4L to facilitate off site visits associated with the Opportunities for Youth Programme (Rotary International)
- Training Youth Child Care Workers (ABSA Foundation - Amalgamated Banks of South Africa)
Dorothy Day said that nonprofits spend their time "comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable". C4L is relentless in its pursuit of donations and grants to meet the costs of making its unique social contribution.
Help us accomplish something that you and your company will be proud of.
VOLUNTOURISM & VOLUNTEERS
C4L welcomes volunteers every year, sometimes one, sometimes in teams. Some come for a short time, some come for a long time. Some come on their own, some come through an agency.
"Volun-tourism" has included teams of Canadians coming to assist with the psychosocial support camps at C4L, and the volunteers have been invaluable in helping to give the 100 campers per season a rewarding experience. Apply soon to come to the PSS camps in December 2010, by contacting C4L at the email address below.
C4L has welcomed work-teams composed of retired people wanting to help out. They have done a lot of improvements to the C4L campus itself, not only the work, but raising money in advance for the materials to do the improvements. C4L arranged schedules for them that include some off-campus touring as well as some repair work to the homes of Child-headed Households. These young people are either members of the C4L Youth Corps, or else identified through the Kids Clubs running through C4L's Child Protection project.
2010 is World Cup year in South Africa. C4L is offering a "voluntourism" package to youth that includes the four soccer elimination games to be played in Nelspruit. Details are available on the What's New? page... The three-week tour includes 5 days of volunteering with local youth organizations.
One Peace Corps volunteer extended her term and stayed for almost three years.
German Development Service (DED) placed a single volunteer at C4L for a year and it went so well that they then offered two volunteers at a time. Signals are that this arrangement will continue indefinitley, with annual replacements.
